Wildlife & Whales Tour

Dedicated whale watching with extended time exploring Scotland’s Marine Protected Area

Home
Corryvreckan Wildlife & Whales Tour (3hrs)
The Ultimate Scottish Whale Watching Experience

This extended tour is designed specifically for wildlife enthusiasts seeking the best possible chance of encountering Scotland’s magnificent marine life. With 4.5 hours on the water, we have the time to visit multiple feeding grounds and patiently search for the whales, dolphins, and seabirds that make these waters special.

Operating in the Firth of Lorn—a designated Special Area of Conservation and Marine Protected Area—we benefit from nutrient-rich waters where environmentally-damaging fishing practices are restricted. This protection has allowed seabeds to regenerate and fish stocks to flourish, creating perfect feeding conditions for minke whales during their summer visits.

The “whale season” in our area typically runs from late May through early September, with July and August offering the most consistent sightings. However, we believe in complete honesty: whales are wild animals, and we cannot guarantee encounters. What we can promise is more time searching, expert guidance, and the flexibility to follow wildlife wherever it leads us.

Your experienced skipper makes route decisions based on daily tidal conditions, weather, sea state, and recent sightings. Routes typically include the Garvellachs (home to St Brendan’s 542 AD monastic settlement), the feeding grounds south of these islands where Atlantic waters bring nutrients to the surface, and the recognised whale hotspots north of Jura. We’ll also pass through the Gulf of Corryvreckan, adding that spectacular natural phenomenon to your day.

Aboard Celtic Adventurer—our purpose-built Cheetah catamaran—you’ll enjoy superior stability at rest and swift travel between locations, maximising your actual wildlife watching time. The heated cabin, binoculars, hot drinks, and onboard toilet ensure comfort throughout your extended adventure.

Your Seafari Vessel

Celtic Adventurer is a Cheetah catamaran built by Cheetah Marine on the Isle of Wight—the same trusted design used by the inshore fishing fleet throughout the UK. This vessel offers significant advantages for extended wildlife watching tours.

Catamaran Benefits

  • Stability at Rest: When we stop to observe wildlife, the catamaran’s twin-hull design provides exceptional stability. This means steadier viewing conditions, more comfortable extended observation periods, and better opportunities for photography.
  • Swift Transit: Powered by twin 300HP engines, Celtic Adventurer covers ground quickly and competently between wildlife hotspots. This means more time actually watching wildlife and less time travelling.
  • All-Weather Comfort: Choose to sit outside on the spacious open deck when weather permits, or enjoy the view from the heated cabin. The flexible indoor-outdoor space means you can remain comfortable regardless of conditions.
  • Facilities: Hot drinks machine, toilet facilities, and comprehensive electronics package including radar and fish finder. Fully licensed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency for 12 passengers plus 2 crew. Complete safety equipment including liferafts.

Our Commitment to Honesty

As a responsible wildlife tour operator, we believe in answering your questions honestly. We want you to have the best possible experience, and that starts with realistic expectations.

Before you book, please ask us:

  • When did you last see whales? We’ll tell you exactly when our most recent whale sightings occurred and which areas they were in.
  • What are the chances of seeing whales on my chosen date? We’ll give you an honest assessment based on recent activity, time of season, and current conditions.
  • How many whales have you seen this year? We track our sightings and can provide accurate statistics for the current season.

Call 01852 300003 or email for the latest whale watching updates.

We see wildlife on the vast majority of our tours—seals, seabirds, dolphins, and porpoises are regularly encountered. However, whale sightings vary with the season and natural behaviour patterns. We would never guarantee something we cannot control, but we will always give you the most current and accurate information available.

Frequently Asked Questions.

Can you guarantee we'll see whales?

No, and we would never make that promise. Whales are wild animals, and sightings vary daily. However, our skippers have decades of experience, we visit multiple feeding grounds, and we’ll make every effort to find them. We see other spectacular wildlife (dolphins, porpoises, seals, eagles) on almost every tour.

What if no whales are around when I want to book?
We’ll be honest with you. If we haven’t had recent sightings, or it’s outside peak season, we’ll explain the situation. You can then proceed knowing the realistic chances.
How is this different from the 2-hour Corryvreckan Wildlife tour?

The extended tour gives us much more time—we can visit multiple feeding grounds, wait patiently for wildlife, and follow whales if we spot them. The 2-hour tour is excellent for general wildlife but doesn’t allow the same dedicated search time. This tour is specifically designed for whale watching.

What about seasickness on a longer tour?

The catamaran’s design provides good stability, which helps. If you’re prone to seasickness, consider taking medication 30 minutes before departure. The tour operates in relatively protected waters, and the heated cabin provides a comfortable retreat if needed.

Is this tour suitable for children?

We recommend minimum age 8 years. The 4.5-hour duration can be challenging for younger children. Teenagers with an interest in wildlife often love this tour. Consider whether your child will enjoy an extended boat trip before booking.

What's the best time of year for whales?

July and August are peak whale season in our area. Late May through June is early season (fewer sightings but still possible), and September is late season (numbers declining but still present). Outside these months, whale sightings are very rare.

Can we bring food and drinks?

Absolutely—we recommend it. There’s a hot drinks machine onboard, but no food is provided. Bring snacks, packed lunch, and plenty of water.

What if we spot whales—can we stay with them?

Yes, within reason and following responsible wildlife watching guidelines. If we encounter whales, we’ll spend time observing them while maintaining respectful distances. The extended duration means we’re not rushed.

What if another boat in your fleet spots whales?

Our boats stay in contact throughout the day. If any Seafari vessel sees whales (or other spectacular wildlife), they can alert your skipper, who will safely redirect the course to the sighting area. This fleet communication significantly increases success rates.

Can we take this tour outside July-August?

Yes, we operate this tour outside peak whale season, but we’ll always be honest about recent sightings. The tour remains excellent for dolphins, seals, seabirds, and scenery, but whale encounters are less likely outside peak months.
